Pho and Beyond is a bit of a stretch from the Main Line, and I am a 45 minute drive from here, but I get my car serviced at Sussman Mazda, so I make a point to stop here according to my service schedule.
These guys don’t dumb stuff down like they do on the Main Line where I live. This is up to the standards of Upper Darby and South Philly. The menu is huge.. I am looking forward to my next oil change to slowly eat my way through it.
The Bún bò Huế (spicy lemongrass beef soup – a close cousin of Pho) is spot on with flavorful (though chewy) brisket, rare (near raw) thinly sliced eye round and Vietnamese “ham” – sort of a white sausage.
The bahn mi is served on a REAL Vietnamese baguette. The veggies are crisp, and we’ll balanced with the meat, and the mayo is SPICY. The bun bo hue had me sweating.. I actually took out the jalapeños I customarily toss in, because there was more than enough burn to the hearty broth. Noodles were perfect (not stuck together like too many other places.) If you live near this place, consider yourself lucky. Prices are VERY reasonable, and service is excellent.
And after this bahn-mi appetizer, I am still full five hours later.. This is the real deal.. Thit nuong, seasoned and seared right with crispy, fresh vegetables and a creamy spicy spread on a light-as-air toasted Vietnamese baguette.
